Chapter 23
The two groups of people had completely different reactions. The three adults from the Yu family were overjoyed and cried tears of happiness, while the couple hugged Yu Jingxuan and cried.
Although Yu Jingxuan was also very happy and excited, it wasn’t to the point of tears. After all, despite not eating very well these past few days and the rough patches, it had still been a fairly happy time overall.
Grandma gently patted Lin Miao’s head, tears in her eyes. "Shui Shui has suffered."
Lin Miao felt it wasn’t too bad; it was just that the adults were too emotional, and she didn’t know what to say. So, she just hugged her grandma.
The adults insisted on carrying them.
Lin Miao and Yu Jingxuan were still thinking about the dog.
Da Huang had just given birth, and it was still raining outside, so it would be best to wrap the dogs up in clothes and carry them out.
But Da Huang was fierce and wouldn’t let anyone get near or touch the puppies.
So, while the adults continued crying in excitement, the two children borrowed a large coat from the bodyguards and wrapped Da Huang and the two puppies in it.
"Da Huang, you need to be good," Lin Miao murmured. "When we get home, you’ll get good food."
Actually, Lin Miao was also hungry; these past few days, she had only been eating sweet potatoes. Thinking about good food made her salivate.
Then, Lin Miao saw her brother wrapping up the remaining sweet potatoes.
These were ones he and Shui Shui had worked hard to dig up, and it would be a shame to throw them away.
The group started heading back.
At the strong insistence of the adults, Lin Miao and her brother were both carried by bodyguards, while Da Huang and the puppies were held by the larger bodyguards.
The group descended the mountain in a grand procession.
Along the way, the young master told the story of these past few days.
He started from the moment they were kidnapped, explaining how Shui Shui dug a hole to escape, how she persuaded other dogs, and how they went to dig sweet potatoes and fetch clean water, all in great detail.
Grandma remembered that it was because of those two jade pendants that they found them in the first place, and it was Shui Shui who had tricked the dog, leading them to the cave. She felt it was truly accurate; Shui Shui was a lucky star.
Father and Mother Yu also couldn’t help but think that if Shui Shui hadn’t come to their house and only Xiao Yu had been kidnapped, the consequences would have been unimaginable.
Lin Miao didn’t know that her brother was earnestly praising her because she had already fallen asleep on the bodyguard’s back.
By the time they reached the halfway point, Yu Jingxuan also fell asleep. They hadn’t eaten well these past few days, so they were easily sleepy.
By the time they reached the highway, a long line of cars was parked, and the doors opened to let the two children inside.
Yu Jingxuan woke up for a moment. His first instinct was to check if Shui Shui was still there. These past days, he had developed a conditioned reflex from being scared by Lin Miao.
Lin Miao also woke up, opened her eyes, saw her brother, and gently touched his forehead. Not hot. Then, she leaned against him and fell back to sleep peacefully.
Yu Jingxuan was warmed by this reflexive action and covered the two of them with the army green coat the bodyguard had handed him.
Father Yu, Mother Yu, and Grandma had a lot they wanted to say, but when they saw the two children like this, they kept quiet.
Mother Yu stared at the children for a long time and couldn’t help but lean on Father Yu, quietly sobbing.
When Lin Miao woke up, it was already dawn. She must have had an internal biological clock because she woke up at this time every day.
They were still in the car. Lin Miao yawned and saw the milk and bread handed to her.
Mother Yu’s eyes were swollen, but she handed her the milk and bread.
As they passed through the town, the two children were still asleep, and most of the shops were still closed. Only the breakfast shop was open, so they bought bread and milk.
Lin Miao always felt a little uneasy around Father and Mother Yu, but she was so hungry that she thanked them and ate.
She broke off half the bread and gave it to the dog in the box.
Da Huang was placed in a large box with a coat under it.
Da Huang didn’t mind and started eating the bread.
It was then that Yu Jingxuan woke up. Mother Yu also handed him some bread and milk. So, the little two sat on one side eating breakfast.
Grandma said, "Xiao Yu, we’ll go to check your body first, then head home."
That was what they were most worried about.
Yu Jingxuan said, "I’m fine. I climbed cliffs with Shui Shui, ran and jumped, and even dug sweet potatoes. I didn’t feel any discomfort."
Lin Miao blushed and felt a little nervous. She was afraid the adults would scold her. After all, whenever her brother caught a cold, the doctor always blamed her.
Yu Jingxuan didn’t notice, and instead asked an important question, "What exactly is wrong with my body?"
Mother Yu said, "You’ve always had a weak body since you were a child..."
"No, I mean, what exactly is wrong with me? Is it a heart condition? Cancer?" Yu Jingxuan continued asking.
Grandma quickly reacted, "Xiao Yu, you mean, your body is fine."
Yu Jingxuan said, "If you don’t specify the illness, it means I’m really fine." He had been bedridden since childhood, so he never questioned this problem.
He had always thought that no one told him what illness he had because it was too serious, and they treated him as if he might die at any time.
So, he had never questioned it.
The three adults fell silent.
Father Yu recalled, "When you were a little over two years old, you kept getting colds, so we hired a family doctor. Later, you kept fainting, but no one could figure out what was wrong. You kept complaining of headaches, and then Dr. Shen took care of you..."
As he said this, he realized how much he had neglected his son. If it turned out that his son’s body was really fine, and yet he had been suffering all this time...
Yu Jingxuan didn’t know what to say and quietly drank his milk with Lin Miao.
Father Yu quickly made a phone call to the police. Whether it was true or not, they had to figure it out.
Yu Jingxuan continued drinking his milk, "When we get home, let’s check on Da Huang. She has a wound on her neck, and she just gave birth to puppies."
When they got home, the two children went to take a bath.
When they came out, they saw that the meal was ready.
Da Huang’s neck injury had been treated, and a plate of meat was placed in front of her. Next to it, there was a dog bed with two puppies crawling inside.
The once-grand living room had suddenly become very down-to-earth.
Meanwhile, the doctor had been caught. At first, he wouldn’t admit anything, but after they found thirty million, he couldn’t argue anymore.
Thirty million. A big sack. They had originally traded in a garbage dump because they needed a big sack to carry that much cash.
Following the clues, they found another thirty million with the former butler. It turned out the whole thing was a conspiracy between two people.
Yes, Father Yu had placed the money at the designated spot, and the butler had stolen it while pretending to be a garbage worker.
Afterward, people who had gotten the wind of it came, but no one knew where the money had ended up.
Over the years, the doctor had made a lot of money by being Yu Jingxuan’s personal doctor.
But the more money you had, the more you wanted, so he came up with this plan.
With his knowledge of the family, the plan had gone smoothly, from finding the kidnappers to distracting the police by using fans, even guiding the investigation off course.
The plan was to have Yu Jingxuan die in the end, so they could blame the kidnappers, and they would get away with it.
However, there were two problems they hadn’t anticipated.
One was that they thought Lin Miao had overheard their plan and wanted to get rid of her, but instead, it was the butler who was fired.
The other was that Yu Jingxuan had returned alive.
Yu Jingxuan then learned why the butler had tried to force Lin Miao out with the chickenpox.
It was because, during a discussion of the kidnapping, they found Lin Miao eavesdropping and thought she had heard something.
When Yu Jingxuan told this to the adults, he didn’t think Shui Shui had overheard anything but asked, "Did they say that one night, Shui Shui was hiding outside their window eavesdropping?"
He suddenly remembered something. Shui Shui had once dropped a book, and they both went out in the middle of the night to pick it up. Someone had been talking at the time, but neither of them had heard clearly.
Back then, he had been running behind, but he had been wearing Lin Miao’s coat.
Yu Jingxuan told the adults about this and made sure that Shui Shui wouldn’t be blamed for anything.
Finally, everything was revealed. Yu Jingxuan felt that the master, though a liar, had inadvertently done a great deed.
Lin Miao didn’t have that many thoughts; she still had to help her brother feed the puppies.
Da Huang had insufficient milk, and the two little ones were particularly hungry, but Da Huang wouldn’t let anyone near them.
So, Lin Miao and her brother each held a small bottle and fed Fei Fei and Jia Jia.
At the same time, Father Yu and Mother Yu were handling the formalities to adopt Lin Miao.
Lin Miao’s original household registration wasn’t with them, and they didn’t meet the adoption requirements. They had always put it off because it seemed troublesome.
But now, all three adults at home liked this shy little girl more and more and decided to change her identity. That way, they could repay her for saving little Yu.
But they would have to make some changes because her current identity had parents, and they couldn’t go through the proper adoption process since they didn’t meet the childless requirement.
However, if they adopted an orphan, they wouldn’t be restricted by that rule.
The important thing was that if they adopted her through the proper process, she would have the same inheritance rights as little Yu.
To them, this seemed like the best way to repay her: the Yu family’s little princess, the daughter of a big star, who would also have inheritance rights.
When Lin Miao heard this, she was stunned. "Huh?"
She didn’t understand inheritance rights and such, and then remembered there was a tradition in the village of having godparents. If a child was sick, they would find a godparent and carve a bow and arrow on a stone.
So, Lin Miao asked, "Is it like becoming a godmother?"
Mother Yu patted her head, "No, it means I am your mother now. I’ll take you out to play, buy you pretty clothes, send you to school, and when you grow up, I’ll prepare a dowry for you..."
The author has something to say:
Grandma: Let Shui Shui add our household registration and become our little princess, okay?
Innocent young master: Okay!
Grown-up Yu Jingxuan: I almost got tricked by my parents again without knowing anything...
