Chapter 16

Early the next morning, while Xia Xi was still tossing and turning in bed, she suddenly heard a clear knocking at the door, accompanied by a magnetic voice.
"Xia Xi, open the door."
Upon hearing the voice at the door, Xia Xi's first reaction was surprise, which quickly turned into annoyance. But both emotions eventually merged into one thought: Why is Lu Yisheng looking for me?
She glanced down at her Hello Kitty pajamas and resolutely decided to pretend she wasn't in the room, closing her eyes and silently repeating to herself, "I'm not here, I'm not here,"
"Xia Xi, I know you're inside. If you don't open the door, I'll keep knocking."
Although the knocking outside was intermittent, it never stopped, making Xia Xi realize that if she didn't open the door, Lu Yisheng would keep waiting outside. His words were no joke.
Xia Xi frowned, weighing her options in her mind. In the end, she decided it would be safer to open the door for Lu Yisheng.
Because the mere thought of paparazzi lurking in the shadows, witnessing Lu Yisheng knocking on a hotel room door early in the morning and letting their wild imaginations run wild with a series of inappropriate scenarios, made Xia Xi’s scalp crawl.
Frustrated, she ruffled her hair, swiftly got out of bed, brushed her teeth, washed her face, and tidied herself up in record time. After repeatedly checking her makeup in the mirror to ensure everything was perfect, she finally opened the door to let the man who had been waiting outside for a while in.
When Xia Xi saw Lu Yisheng looking impeccably dressed, a flicker of unease crossed her eyes, and a faint blush crept onto her cheeks. She awkwardly touched her nose, lowered her head, and said in a calm tone, "Mr. Lu, what brings you here so early?"
As she lowered her head, Xia Xi made a troubled expression where Lu Yisheng couldn’t see, realizing that his influence on her had far exceeded her expectations.
"I came to have breakfast with you," Lu Yisheng said, placing the food he was carrying on the table. He turned to look at Xia Xi and asked casually, "I hope it’s not an inconvenience, or are you not welcoming me?"
Welcoming or not, it should have been a simple question, but Xia Xi didn’t know how to answer. She lifted her head, taking in Lu Yisheng’s handsome features and seemingly gentle gaze, while listening to her own racing heartbeat. All she could do was sigh silently.
Xia Xi felt that this time, she might be in trouble. Before this, she had never imagined she could develop such uncontrollable feelings for a man she had only met a few times.
Perhaps these feelings had sparked during that scene in Fate of Immortals; maybe it was when she saw Lu Yisheng’s dedication to his craft; or perhaps it had started from their very first encounter,
So overwhelming, and so inexplicable.
She slowly walked over to Lu Yisheng’s side, taking the bowl of wontons he handed her. Instead of answering his earlier question, she asked, "Why did you come to have breakfast with me?"
Why had he come to have breakfast with Xia Xi?
A trace of confusion flickered in Lu Yisheng’s usually calm eyes. He hadn’t really thought about the reason. He supposed it might be out of gratitude, gratitude for the delicious bowl of congee she had her assistant send over yesterday.
From the first sip, he had thought it was the best congee he had ever tasted.
It was truly delicious,
Xia Xi waited a long time for Lu Yisheng’s reply, almost thinking he wouldn’t answer, when she heard his soft voice beside her ear, "Today’s breakfast is to thank you for the congee you had your assistant bring yesterday. It was really good."
So it was because of the congee.
Upon hearing this answer, Xia Xi felt a pang of disappointment. But upon reflection, what other reason could there be?
Because he had fallen in love with her at first sight?
Hah, how foolish of her.
Xia Xi glanced at Lu Yisheng indifferently and said, "Is that so? There’s no need to thank me too much. Everyone got some of that congee."
Hearing this, Lu Yisheng initially wanted to say more, but sensing the noticeably lower atmosphere around Xia Xi, he raised an eyebrow slightly and remained silent.
For a moment, neither of them spoke, and the room fell into an odd silence.
"If you were the firework over the sea, I’d be the foam of the waves. In that moment, your light illuminated me"
A melodious tune interrupted Xia Xi's sorrowful mood and broke the awkward silence between her and Lu Yisheng.
Frowning, she pulled her phone from her pajama pocket. She had intended to decline the call, but upon seeing the glaring name "Da He" on the screen, she tremblingly pressed the answer button.
"Hello, Da He?"
"Xia Xi, listen, I've gotten two decent variety show opportunities from Luo Chu'an. One is a cross-border singing show, and the other is cross-border crosstalk. But their schedules conflict, so you can only choose one. I'm calling to ask you, which one do you want to do?"
"Da He, which one do you think is better?" Xia Xi asked weakly.
"Make your own decision. Why ask me? Don't you have any idea which one you like or prefer?" Da He's voice carried a hint of irritation. "Hurry up and decide, don't dawdle!"
Honestly, Xia Xi was fine with either option, but compared to singing, she had a slightly greater interest in crosstalk.
So, after hearing Da He repeatedly tell her to decide for herself, she stopped being indecisive and straightforwardly shared her thoughts. "Da He, how about choosing crosstalk? It feels like crosstalk has been developing pretty fast these past few years,"
But before she could finish, she heard Da He snort coldly on the other end, his voice gruff and clearly angry. "Crosstalk! A young woman like you, standing there in a traditional gown performing crosstalk! Just imagine that scene, do you think it looks good?"
Xia Xi thought about it and actually found the image quite appealing. However, judging by Da He's tone, he clearly disapproved of her choosing crosstalk. Tentatively, she asked, "Should I go with cross-border singing then?"
"Hmm, that's a much better choice. Xia Xi, you're really getting smarter now." Da He's tone noticeably calmed down, filled with obvious satisfaction. He even gave her a rare compliment. "Alright, since you also think cross-border singing is good, I'll help you negotiate the contract in the next few days."
"Okay." Initially, Xia Xi hadn't cared much about which one she picked, but when she caught the mockery in Lu Yisheng's eyes, her "okay" felt as heavy as a thousand pounds. She even choked up slightly while saying it, giving off an utterly pitiful vibe.
How utterly embarrassing, Xia Xi thought despairingly to herself. No one is probably as scared of their agent as I am.
